Price is a bit high but, if you're running Nikon equipment, it will behoove you to consider the Nikon software. I use CCP to photograph historic ledgers and the camera has to be tethered and not touched during the process. When I switched from a small historical group's Nikon D with damaged pixels to my own Nikon D and a new laptop, my old registration number wouldn't work, not enough characters.
Big mistake, which I won't make again. I was told to uninstall CCP and ViewNX2, buy a new Nikon memory card although my old one worked fine, use their registry cleaner, and then repeat the process.
The software was all downloaded using DSL and I wasted a lot of time on it. I also purchased a new cable early on in the process, thinking that was the problem. At no point, did tech support suggest their 64 bit version could be the problem. My husband suggested the 32 bit version, and lo and behold, it worked well. I'll let the real photographers talk about all the features of Camera Control Pro 2, but I can't take historic ledger photographs without it.
Camera Control Pro easily allows me to set file names, determine where the photographs are stored, and all the functions except focusing the camera. Since the Nikon D is my own camera, I still use it for other photographs. Amazon shipped me a ten year old version of this software. The DVD installed version 2. So old that the automatic update would not work. Finally found out that the current version is 2. Downloaded the demo version and fortunately the license key worked.
One week of misery trying to get the software to work and it was all because of Amazon shipping ancient inventory. The actual functioning of the software seems to be OK. I bought Camera Control to shoot Santa Pictures for an event. I put my camera on a tripod and did all focusing and shooting through live-view mode on my laptop screen.
I think I touched the camera once in two hours to change the battery, as shooting tethered in Live View sucked the juice From the capture, I printed to a Canon Selphy and handed the picture to each kid in about 1 minute. I can also see myself using Camera Control Pro when doing portraits, as the ability to instantly see the image on a high-definition 17" laptop screen makes adjustments and feedback a whole lot easier than just relying on the 3" sceen on the back of my D Pierre Tinel Top Contributor: Photography.
It is a great software if you have a use for it. It is not for any camera just some Nikon's one so be careful to check on Nikon site first.
One person found this helpful. I tried to shoot tethered using Adobe Lightroom, however there always seemed to be issues in the middle of a shoot. Just check the forums and you'll see many samples. I purchased the Nikon Control Pro 2 software and it works great. I'm still using Lightroom to monitor the folder where the files are being loaded, however I think in the future I will just use Adobe Bridge as I've moved my "light weight" retouching to OnOne Perfect Photo Suite Not sure I need Lightroom anymore See all reviews.
Top reviews from other countries. Camera Control is pricey but it works. There are all sorts of free-ware or cheap versions out there. I tried them all but nothing came close to Nikon's own product in terms of ease-of-use and functionality. Firstly, check, check, and check again if and how it will work with your Nikon camera. Camera Control is a scaleable product in that the functionality of the software depends on what camera you have, and I've read reports that it might not work as described for some older Nikon products.
I have a D and the software works great. I'm using it with a 5m USB extension lead to extend the length of the ridiculously short Nikon, cable so you'll probably need one of these too.
For video production it's great as you can preview the film on your Mac, shoot and it will transfer the video automatically after recording. Nice touch. Note: If you don't understand the next comment then you don't need to worry about it. The only quibble I have is that there was no way of turning AEL on or off during video either in live or shooting mode. In Tripod mode, remote selection of the desired autofocus point is possible. Supports the Picture Control system which allows image parameters to be selected and adjusted on a computer, and custom curves tone compensation data to be created and saved back to the camera.
